Claire-Louise Bennett and László Krasznahorkai shortlisted for the European Literature Prize 2023
Claire-Louise Bennett and László Krasznahorkai have been shortlisted for the European Literature Prize for 2023. László Krasznahorkai is shortlisted for his novel War & War (Wereldbibliotheek), translated from Hungarian into Dutch by Mari Alföldy, a book that won the Man Booker International Prize in 2015 and tells the story of a Hungarian man who is obsessed with a mysterious manuscript, which he decides to travel to New York City to write down and post on the Internet. Claire-Louise Bennett is shortlisted for her debut novel Checkout 19 (Koppernik), translated from English by Karina van Santen and Martine Vosmaer, which is the story of a writer's fervid encounters with writing, her own and others.
The European Literature Prize draws attention specifically to contemporary novels from the European language area, thereby emphasizing the continent’s literary diversity and cultural richness.
