In 1945, after five years as an evacuee, 12-year-old Rusty returns home to England from the US and is shocked by what she finds - a world of war-damaged cities, rationing and drabness. Although Rusty feels homesick trying to belong to both countries, her spirit leads her to a dramatic conclusion.
