Born in Manaus in 1952, Milton Hatoum has taught literature at University of Amazonas and the University of California, Berkeley. He made his debut in 1989 with the novel Tale of a Certain Orient, followed by The Brothers in 2000, both winners of the Jabuti award for best novel and published in eleven countries.
