Holly Brown is a writer, currently studying for a PhD in Archaeology at the University of Oxford, which explores the evidence of mortuary practice for the social and political roles played by women in early medieval Europe. Prior to this, she gained an MSt in History from the University of Cambridge, investigating whether ‘princely burials’ such as that at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk can illuminate the gaps in written evidence for early English kingship. Holly also hosts a fast-growing Substack newsletter, ‘Medieval Musings’, which shares the history of early medieval England with a popular-level audience. She lives in South Yorkshire with her husband and young son, and enjoys exploring the nearby Peak District.
