Elisabeth Gifford studied French and world religions at Leeds University. She worked as a dyslexia specialist while raising three children. She has a diploma in creative writing from Oxford OUDCE and a MA in creative writing from Royal Holloway College. She has written The House of Hope, a biography of Dr Joyce Hill who rescues abandoned babies in China, and three historical novels. Secrets of the Sea House is set in the Hebrides and explores at the real events behind the mermaid sightings in Scotland a century ago. It was shortlisted for the Crown debut historical fiction award. Return to Fourwinds is a family saga set between the wars. The Good Doctor of Warsaw is a novelised true account of some of the rare survivors of the Warsaw ghetto in WW2, and features the story of Dr Janusz Korczak, a Polish-Jewish Dr Barnardo. Her new novel, The Lost Lights of St Kilda (Corvus, 2020), is set in Scotland.
