Dorothy Edwards was born Dorothy Violet Ellen Brown on 6^th November 1914. She was born into a working-class family and her father taught her to read at an early age. This enabled her to write her first story at four years old. She had many stories, poems and articles published throughout her twenties. During this time she married her husband Frank Edwards and had two children. Her most famous stories are of My Naughty Little Sister, which she conceived to entertain her daughter whilst on a family holiday in 1950. She published several anthologies of short stories and poetry for children. She was also shortlisted for the Whitbread Award for children’s literature for The Witches and the Grinnygog. This novel was later adapted for television. Dorothy Edwards was part of the 1950s radio show Listen with Mother. In addition to this she wrote for the BBC television series Playschool, as well as Jackanory. She died in 1982.
