Requests are dealt with as speedily as possible, but it is important to apply as far ahead of your deadline as you can.

Regrettably, we cannot accept telephone enquiries about permissions.

Our clients reserve the right to refuse permission to reproduce their copyright material.

Permission fees

There is a minimum fee of £70.50, where a fee is charged.

The current fees for major world English language (WEL) rights are as follows:-

Prose: £170 per thousand words.

Poetry: £140 for up to 10 lines, £2.50 per line for the next 20 lines and £2 per line thereafter (if more than one poem is used, the fee for each poem is calculated separately).

The fees are smaller if the territory sought is less than World English language:

World excluding USA: 60% of WEL

US + Canada: two-thirds of WEL

World excluding USA and Canada: 55% of WEL

USA or Europe: 50% of WEL

British Commonwealth including Canada: 50% of WEL

British Commonwealth excluding Canada: 45% of WEL

Major individual country or language other than English: 25% of WEL

Australasia or UK: one-third of WEL

The fees are increased by 50% for each additional edition (eg paperback, bookclub) and are reduced by 50% for scholarly works where printings are 1,000 copies or less.

Fair Dealing

Limited extracts may be used free of charge providing correct attribution and acknowledgement is given if the work in which the extract is to appear is published for the purpose of criticism or review and if the extract falls into the following categories:

Prose: a single extract of up to 400 words or series of extracts, none exceeding 300 words, totalling 800 words (Biographies do not fall into this category)

Poetry: up to 40 lines providing no more than a quarter of the poem is used (if more than one poem, add up individual lines)

Fair dealing does not apply to anthologies, musical settings or unpublished works.

The author images which appear on this site are subject to copyright laws and permission must be sought for any reproduction. Photographs of our authors may not be used without the prior consent of the copyright holder (usually the photographer) and a fee may be payable.
